Projects towards carbon-free production

Pohjolan Voima invests heavily in projects which reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of energy generation.

Hydropower renovation

Pohjolan Voima has renovated its hydropower plants in the river Iijoki since 2005. Four hydropower plants have been renovated in eight years.

The hydropower renovation programme envisages the refurbishment and modernisation of the Iijoki hydropower plants.

The Kollaja reservoir project would increase renewable,
emission-free balancing power.

Hämeenkyrö bioenergy power plant

The Hämeenkyrö bioenergy power plant is Pohjolan Voima's fifteenth power plant, completed in 2012. The power plant uses logging residue and other wood-based fuels and replaces natural gas-based energy production.

Projects

The Hämeenkyrö bioenergy plant was completed in the autumn 2012.

Vaskiluoto biogasification plant

A new biomass gasification plant has been constructed in Vaskiluoto, Vaasa next to the existing coal-fired power plant. The aim is to replace coal with domestic fuels and, at the same time, reduce carbon dioxide emissions of the power plant.

Biocoal

Pohjolan Voima is participating in a research project that studies the possibility of replacing coal with wood-based biocoal. Biomass-based biocoal can be used as such in existing coal-fired power plants.

Nuclear power

The largest single investment in Finnish industrial history, the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant unit is under construction. The fourth nuclear power plant unit has proceeded to engineering and bidding phase.
