Minister of the Interior, Ms Anne Holmlund laid the foundation stone of the new bioenergypower plant of Porin Prosessivoima Oy, a subsidiary of Pohjolan Voima, on 18 July 2007.The new power plant will be completed at the Kemira Pigments Oy's Kaanaa factory site in Pori at the end of 2008.The total investment amounts to approximately 140 million euros.
In addition to a new boiler utilising circulating fluidized bed combustion technology and a district heating back-pressure turbine, the investment includes a district heat transfer pipe to Pori and steam transfer pipe to the Pihlava factory site. The boiler will be delivered by Metso Power Oy and the turbine by Siemens Ag. The foundation contractor of the building site is Rakennus Vuorenpää Oy. The maximum strength of the workforce will be about 260 in February andMarch 2008. The installation of equipment will begin in the winter 2008. Preparations for start-up in autumn 2008 aim at commencing the commercial use of the power plant in the beginning of 2009.
The capacity of the new power plant is 65 MW of electricty, 140 MW of steam and 70 MW of district heat. The energy is delivered to Kemira, for the purposes of industrial processes in Kaanaa and Pihlava, and to the City of Pori for district heating of the downtown and Meri-Pori areas. The plant will be fired with wood fuel, peat, coal and recycled fuels.
The power plant will facilitate the production increase of Kemira Pigments at Pori and reduce the use of oil in industry and district heat production. Afterthe completion of the investment, outdated capacity with a lower efficiency owned by Pori Energia will be taken out of operation at the Pihlava and Aittaluoto factory sites. The new power plant is a part of Pohjolan Voima's biofuel programme which has as its objective the increased use of renewable energy by utilising local biofuel resources efficiently.
