Juha Korkeaoja officiated at the inauguration of the Rauman Voima biofuel power plant

Mr Juha Korkeaoja, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, inaugurated the biofuel power plant of Rauman Voima Oy on 27th November 2006. The new power plant produces electricity and process steam for the UPM Rauma paper mill as well as district heat and electricity for Rauman Energia Oy. The total investment amounts to 75 million euros. The project was carried out jointly by UPM, Pohjolan Voima and Rauman Energia.

The production capacity of the power plant is 76 megawatts (MW) of electricity, 140 MW of process steam and 50 MW of district heat. The main fuels are bark and felling residue such as branches, top refuse and stumps. Additional fuels utilised include peat, biosludge and small quantities of recycled fuels. The ignition and reserve fuel is oil.

The new power plant was built on the site of the old boiler and turbine which had been in operation at the mill for over 40 years. The construction was begun in early 2005 and at times as many as 200 people were working on site.
