Porin Prosessivoima Oy's new biofuel power plant at Kaanaa in Pori has reached its topping-out height and the boiler's equipment installations have been initialised. The construction of the district heating pipe belonging to the investments has progressed from the centre of Pori to Ulasoori. During the spring of 2008, the construction of the power plant and transmission pipe will generally employ over 300 persons. As planned, the power plant's commercial use will begin in early 2009.
The total value of the substantial investment is approximately EUR 140 million. Besides the power plant, the investments include the construction of a district heating transmission pipe from the centre of Pori to Kaanaa as well as a steam transmission pipe to the Pihlava industrial site.
The new power plant will generate electricity at 65 MW, steam at 140 MW and district heating at 70 MW. Energy will be generated to meet Kemira Pigments Oy's and Pori Energia Oy's needs, industrial processes at Kaanaa and Pihlava, as well as for district heating in the centre of Pori and the Meri-Pori area.
The power plant nearing completion will mean an increased use of biofuels and reduced carbon dioxide emissions in district heating and industrial energy production. The new power plant will improve the operational prerequisites for industry and reduce the use of oil in process and energy and district heating production. When the investments have been completed, Pori Energia Oy's outdated and less efficient facilities at the Pihlava and Aittaluoto industrial sites will be decommissioned. The power station's fuels will be wood, peat, coal and recycled materials.
Pohjolan Voima Oy's subsidiary Porin Prosessivoima Oy was founded in 2005 to implement energy co-operation with Kemira Pigments Oy and Pori Energia Oy. The power plant currently under construction is a continuation of Pohjolan Voima's biofuel programme whose goal is to increase the use of renewable energy by effectively utilising the region's bioenergy resources.
