Pohjolan Voima's subsidiary Laanilan Voima Oy has decided to initialise environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedures related to the construction of an approximately 300 MW biofuel power plant for Kemira's factory site at Laanila in Oulu. The assessment has one alternative that would solve the Kemira's future energy needs. According to the preliminary time schedule, the investment decision could be made in 2015.
Laanilan Voima's primary solution is a new waste incinerator power plant for the Kemira factory site; the environmental permit application is currently being processed by the Supreme Administrative Court of Finland. The project is being planned jointly with the City of Oulu.
In the EIA procedures now beginning for the new biofuel power plant, biofuels and waste will also be studied as parallel fuel alternatives.
Laanilan Voima's existing power plant generates electricity, process steam and district heating for Kemira's Oulu factories, the City of Oulu and Oulun Energia.
