Nordic Energy Link AS will construct a direct current cable connection, Estlink, between two substations ? Harku 330 kV substation and 400 kV substation. Estlink will be the first interconnection between the Baltic and Nordic electricity systems. The total cost of the project will be some EUR 110 million. The completion of the Baltic-Finnish submarine cable is scheduled to the end of 2006.
Timo Rajala, President and CEO of Pohjolan Voima Oy, says that Estlink adds to Pohjolan Voima's supply of electricity.
?The cable investment decided today is an excellent example of the targets set by Pohjolan Voima, the largest privately held energy company in Finland. Versatility has been our consistent target in Finland. An important component in this is the possibility to import electricity from different countries. A wide range of supply sources also gives us flexibility in situations where the social acceptance and competitiveness of certain production forms may change. Versatility means also security for a country with insufficient energy resources of its own.?
Estlink will be a direct current cable between two substations ? Harku 330 kV substation (Estonia) and Espoo 400 kV substation (Finland). The total length of the cable is ca. 100 km.
The partners in the Estlink project are the three Baltic power utilities ?Eesti Energia, Latvenergo, Lietuvos Energija as well as Pohjolan Voima and Helsinki Energy of Finland through their jointly owned company.
