The turbines and the generator arrive at Kaukaan Voima power plant construction site

The construction and installation work at the bioenergy power plant, a joint venture of Pohjolan Voima and Lappeenrannan Energia, is proceeding as planned in Lappeenranta. The two turbines and the generator delivered by Siemens AG will arrive at the UPM Kaukas mill site harbour in Lappeenranta by the end of this week.

The equipment was assembled and shipped in Germany. At Vuosaari harbour the equipment was loaded on a barge that will transport it through the Saimaa canal to the UPM Kaukas mill site harbour. The weight of the equipment varies between 100 and 250 tonnes.

In Kaukas the turbines and the generator will be loaded on low-bed trailers and delivered to the erection site next to the turbine building, where they will be lifted to approximately 12 meters height with hydraulic cranes and then positioned on to their predesigned places. The generator will be hauled first, then the larger turbine and, lastly, the district heating turbine. Preparation for these installation works was begun already in February with exchanger installations.

According to today's estimate the machinery units will arrive at Kaukas on Sunday morning. The installations of these components are among the most demanding in the project, said Mr Timo-Pekka Aaltonen, Installation Manager for Kaukaan Voima project.

The construction work has proceeded to the last remaining projects, while nearly 90 per cent of the installation work has also been finished. The test runs, various inspections and testing that have been ongoing since the spring 2009 will continue.

The first set of the fuel transporters has been taken into production use. The installation work at the boiler will be completed, followed by a mechanical installation inspection, at the end of July. Natural gas burn will begin in August and solid fuel burn in September. The piping blow downs will begin in the middle of August. This will cause noise in the daytime.

The construction site employs around 450 people at the moment, but the number will diminish considerably towards the end of July.

Once completed at the beginning of next year, Kaukaan Voima bioenergy power plant will produce process steam and electricity to the UPM Kaukas mill complex, and electricity and district heat to Lappeenrannan Energia.
