Porin Prosessivoima’s electric boiler, completed in late summer, was officially inaugurated at an opening ceremony on 30 September 2026. The investment is designed to respond more effectively to the balancing needs of Finland’s electricity system and to ensure flexible energy production. In addition, it reduces fuel consumption and thereby lowers emissions. The electric boiler converts electrical energy into heat for the district heating network.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the ribbon was held by Maria Nummelin and Kimmo Kurikka. Cutting the ribbon is City of Pori Mayor Lauri Inna, accompanied by Eero Niemitalo, CEO of Porin Prosessivoima.

The 60 MW electric boiler was commissioned as part of the existing power plant complex in mid-August 2026. Its output corresponds to the heating capacity required by approximately 6,000 detached houses. The investment decision for the project was made in March 2025, and equipment installation began in March 2026. The final stages of the project were carried out partly in parallel.

“Our objective was to further improve energy efficiency, increase the share of renewable fuels from the current 92 per cent, and contribute to balancing Finland’s electricity system. With the completion of the electric boiler, Porin Prosessivoima represents a modern next-generation power plant. I would like to thank the entire project team for their strong professional expertise and commitment in delivering this complex project. Occupational safety was a key priority throughout the project, and we achieved an excellent result in that respect,” says Eero Niemitalo, Managing Director of Porin Prosessivoima Oy.

Electric boilers are used in the production of process steam and district heat, particularly when electricity prices are low and there is an abundance of electricity available in the system. In this way, they can help balance the electricity system quickly and efficiently, as electricity consumption and generation must remain in continuous balance. Electric boilers are highly energy-efficient, as electrical energy is converted into heat with very little loss. The energy efficiency of Porin Prosessivoima’s operations has also been enhanced by a flue gas heat recovery system completed at the end of 2024. The commissioning of the electric boiler will further reduce the need to use natural gas as a backup fuel at the power plant.

“For some time now, our investment decisions have focused on reducing emissions while improving fuel efficiency. As a result, we have reduced fossil CO₂ emissions from heat production by approximately 4,500 tonnes and have been able to completely phase out peat as a fuel at the power plant,” Niemitalo concludes.
