The steam turbine and generator at Kymin Voima’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant will undergo a full overhaul during the summer of 2026. The overhaul is a scheduled maintenance procedure required by the manufacturer and was last carried out in 2018. Work began at the beginning of June and is expected to be completed in August. The plant is expected to resume normal production in the autumn.
Planning and preparations for the turbine overhaul at Kymin Voima began in 2023. The extensive project has progressed on schedule, and dismantling of the turbine and generator for refurbishment commenced on 1 June 2026.
“During the overhaul, the generator rotor will be removed and transported to our partner Elcoline’s service centre in Västerås, Sweden, for maintenance. The turbine itself will be serviced on site by Siemens Energy. In addition, we will service and inspect auxiliary equipment, including pumps, heat exchangers, lubrication oil systems, as well as key control and safety systems,” says Juha Vuolteenaho, Plant Manager.
The boiler and turbine at the Kymin Voima power plant were commissioned in 2002. The previous overhaul of the turbine and generator was carried out in 2018.
“Maintenance projects of this scale are typically carried out approximately every eight years, so they require thorough advance planning. Critical spare parts are ordered well in advance, taking into account long delivery times. The actual condition of the equipment will only be fully known once it has been opened and the components inspected. Due to the long intervals between overhauls, such projects are relatively rare and also provide important opportunities for the organisation to share and develop turbine-related expertise and know-how,” Vuolteenaho adds.
The extensive maintenance work has been scheduled to coincide with the plant’s summer shutdown. Refurbished components will be reinstalled between late July and early August. The aim is to complete the project by mid-August. Test runs will be conducted when the plant is restarted in the autumn.
