Production in 2023

Pohjolan Voima produces over 20% of all electricity generated in Finland. In 2023, we produced 17.0 TWh of electricity and 2.8 TWh of heat.

Electricity consumption in Finland in 2023 amounted to 80 TWh. Finnish electricity production totalled 78 TWh, while net imports into Finland amounted to 2 TWh.

Producer of electricity and heat

At the end of 2023, Pohjolan Voima´s total electricity production capacity was 2,889 MW. Our share of the total electricity generation capacity in Finland was about 13%, Our total heat production capacity was 1,089 MW. We produce electrcity and heat at cost price to our shareholders with reliable and adjustable hydroelectric, thermal and nuclear power that ensures security of supply.

In 2023, 99% of our electricity production and 90% of our heat production was carbon neutral. Electricity production forms in Pohjolan Voima’s portfolio that are considered to be carbon neutral are hydropower and nuclear power, as well as electricity produced with carbon-neutral wood-based fuels and recyled biofuels in thermal power plants.

Nuclear power made up 81.5% (72.2) of electricity supply, increasing after the Olkiluoto 3 power plant unit (OL3) started regular electricity production. Teollisuuden Voima Oyj’s (TVO) Olkiluoto nuclear power plant generated 24.7 (16.4) TWh of electricity, of which Pohjolan Voima obtained 14.4 (9.2) TWh, in accordance with its shareholding.

Hydropower accounted for 1.8 (1.7) TWh, or 10.3% (12.9) of the electricity supply. Hydropower production increased from the previous year to close to the production volume of a year with normal water conditions. A total of 0.9 (1.2) TWh of electricity was produced in combined heat and power (CHP) plants. Their share of the total supply was 4.9% (9.6).
